The Little Things

Ever since Valentine’s Day rolled through last week, I’ve been hearing some very sweet stories. Not the typical flowers and chocolate stuff.

A friend of mine told me this sweet story after her husband left for a business trip. He was going out of town for a while and he had to leave super early in the morning. My friend was somewhat awake and heard him packing and getting ready to go, and the next thing she heard was his car driving off. She thought it was weird because he would normally say goodbye even that early in the morning. A few minutes later, she heard a car pull up and a door shut. He must have forgotten something. He forgot to say goodbye! He came all the way back just for a hug and a kiss. So sweet!

This other sweet story has to do with sweet tea. This mother of 3 woke up with a headache one morning and a long list of things to do. Her husband leaves for work and she starts her day. Not fifteen minutes later after he left, he called her saying he saw a package on the front porch with her name on it. She wasn’t expecting a package, but she goes to check. It was a large Chick-fil-a sweet tea. She said, and I quote, “His simple gift spoke volumes to me.”

All these sweet stories made me want to brag on the husband a little. He came home for lunch one day last week to let the dog out and get a bite to eat. I got home at 5:30 expecting clutter to pick up in the living room and a sink full of dishes. Instead, I found a note telling me that the dog and the husband cleaned up a little while they were home for lunch. There could not have been a better gift.

It will always be the little things.

Just goes to show how it’s the little things that count.
And it goes to show that thoughtful men are still around.
Working at a marriage isn’t all that hard…small gestures are an important step in the right direction.
